It is a tragedy for the Englishmen and Englishwomen as Bukayo Saka follows the footsteps of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and ultimately Gareth Southgate (EURO 1996) in missing from the penalty spot in front of the home-fans at the world stage.
Queens We Are The Champions is blasting inside and outside everyone's mind when Italy is crowned the champions of EURO 2020 at Wembley on Sunday night 11.7. But the English aren't celebrating the bitter loss in front of 60 000 fans in London, for them it is a night to forget, both the good and the bad. This is the tale of life, it cannot work any other way, there must be a victorious champion and on the other side a disappointed and bitter looser, there must be a success story and a failure to mirror it. Simply, let the fact be stated, there is always a certain kind of sadness involved with the happiness. Everyone can't be happy. But why is that? In this blog post a discussion is of the most vital interest, why is this double-sided tale of life such a painful tragedy? Yet again I have to ask: why did you God create such a cruel world? And finally letting aside this bitterness of the tales of life, and using football as an example; how does it come that we may unite, both friends and foes in celebrating greatness?
Both sports and music, and the events they proceed to entertain us with are common ways in how humanity can for a moment feel as One. We feel the passion with fellow fans when cheering to our favorite club or artist. We feel the sadness and pain, just like our fellow fans. We feel the joy of the success, as if we were as fans the success itself, even when in reality it is the players on the pitch that the fate of success is up to. In football (association as well as American football) we often regard fans as the 12th man or player on the pitch. In music the atmosphere of a live audience cannot in any way be replicated in a studio environment, and the live audience is what makes these events a joy to behold and admire. Only fighting in times of war for your country could be argued to have a stronger uniting factor.
As independent as we are supposed to be by the evolving and ever-so modernizing social environment, as well as our own expectations, it still makes perfectly sense that we humans have desire and necessity to believe and be part of something much larger. Religion is the one that can acclaim the role as uniting humans in beliefs and sense of unity in something greater; God. Obviously, today we have slowly started to grow a more skeptical view in regards to what to believe and in Religion. Then there is society, which is our second need to be part of something, as a social/political animal that we are, and which can be divided into: friendship, partnership, teams, organizations, families (both kin and brotherhood), clubs, associations and the list goes on. The attempt here is to arrive at a safe conclusion that we as developed intellectuals, with yet as-ever incredible imaginative mind and naive believes, and as naturally sociopolitical animals have a Need to feel as One. But surely this cannot be all...?
One common argument could be that we take pride in the success of other human beings, as success for an individual, is success to the entire humanity or that we simply desire everyone to be happy, and we take joy in both wishing and seeing other human beings in a happy state. But really these are extremely naive and even slightly utilitarian arguments that lack the finesse required for these kinds of bold statements.
What I think the case thoroughly is about is that we have an eye for greatness and in great times we can let go just for a moment the burden of independent and subjective life, and unite in enjoying as One. We may for once or twice a year, or a month, or perhaps even a week, just be and at the same time let everyone else also just be, and in being I mean feel a sense of security and unity in being part of something great. We do not have to be the front-man, at the center of attention, or even be at the main stage, to be able to feel a sense of pride and success. But then there is only left the case of: where is the failure and looser to mirror the success and it all, as that was stated as a clear necessity to the double-sides story?
Well, the rest has to wait for a later day...but after all, everything good comes in time!
O.K
